About this Role

eir is wishing to recruit a Graduate Engineer to join it’s Optical Systems Design and Support Group.The Engineer will be part of eir’s Fixed Network Group and have responsibility for designing and expanding it’s optical and core fibre transmission networks. The Engineer will be working on leading edge technologies such as ROADM, DWDM and optical fibre delivery which underpin the heart of eir’s Broadband network. The Engineer must have an Hons Degree in Electrical/Electronic or

Telecommunications Engineering. Ideally the candidate would be a recent graduate or have up to 2 years relevant experience.

What is expected from the Role?

Key Tasks/ Objectives


  • Generate design/implementation plans for the following programmes:

  • eir’s transmission network (ROADM/ WDM)

  • Core fibre build.

  • Design and implement transmission solutions to deliver customer orders.

  • Project Manage transmission designs through to implementation.

  • Provide technical support to Operational Areas (on call availability may be a requirement of this role)

  • Manage network upgrades including firmware upgrades.

  • Acceptance testing of new firmware and Network Manager releases prior to implementation.

  • Provide bid support and costing to other business areas.

  • Develop systems and processes to ensure programmes are delivered on time and within financial targets.

  • Provide regular reports on project and financial status against forecast targets.

  • Develop external relationships (e.g. supplier / manufacturers/operators/standards bodies) to identify new systems development and technologies for introduction. People Development

  • Foster and develop good working relationships with relevant internal and external customers

  • Foster and develop good working relationships with other team members.

  • Network reliability and functionality.

  • Results benchmarked against financial and budgetary targets.

Requirements for a Successful Application:

Competency Profile

  • Hons Degree in Electrical/Electronic or Telecommunications Engineering.

  • Recent graduate or 2 years experience.

  • Knowledge of optical transmission systems e.g. ROADM , WDM, SDH, Fibre advantageous.

  • Project management and design techniques.

  • Analytical ability

  • Customer and results focused.

  • Ability to work as part of a team.

  • Ability to meet tight schedules

  • Self-motivated and confident.
