About This Role:

Role Purpose 

The Core Networks Senior DevOps Networks Engineers carry out detailed design and support of eir’s mobile Core Networks and technical infrastructure, ensuring that platforms and services are cost-effective and support the eir’s business strategies.  


Expectations From The Role:

Nature and Scope 

  • The Core Networks team is responsible for various key aspects of the delivery of mobile 

  • services to our customers, including the implementation and support of the solutions that are fundamental in the monetization of our technical services and provide first class services to our subscribers. 

  • The role purpose is to lead initiatives in innovative and agile design, support and maintenance of continuously evolving networks, platforms, services and related systems. 

  • DevOps is a key component of this role and will involve on-call support. 

  • While the aspects related to the Core Networks systems design, implementation and support will be the primary objectives for this role, there will be significant opportunities to work in other areas and be involved in exciting new end to end technical solutions that will empower our future services. 

  • The quality, operational efficiency, usability, and cost of ownership of the resulting solutions are key indicators of success.  

  • It is important that engineers influence and align with Core Network’s strategy and facilitate the progression of goals which include operational efficiency, optimised cost of ownership, implementation, and support of resilient, future-proofed solutions.  

  • Engineers are required to provide thought leadership by identifying and translating developments in telecoms and IT into opportunities for exploitation within the business. Core Networks engineers exert significant influence on how eir can exploit both its existing investment in network infrastructure and future developments in the industry. At a personal level, they require the determination and strength of conviction to be able to insist on certain courses of action being taken in the interest of long-term benefits and must be able to support those design decisions at the highest levels within eir. 

 

Accountabilities  

General 

  • Influence and develop target and transition architectures which influence and align with CTO and Business strategies.  

  • Prepare detailed specifications, estimates, designs, record structures, triggers, rules, interfaces, resilience and contingency plans.  

  • Undertake the development of solutions conforming to required timescales, quality standards, and acceptance criteria. 

  • Lead and coordinate the production of technical services descriptions and technical documents for all new solutions in the Core Networks team. Manage and support the hand-over of new services to the team.  

  • Align with eir values to drive the vision, mission, and culture of the organisation to ensure successful growth and retention of its customers. 

 

Technical 

  • Take design and support ownership of eir’s Core Networks systems, fast paced new service introduction, improving on current cost and service levels, and conforming to eir’s agile principles and policies.  

  • Oversee and manage Capacity Management and Hardware/Software release management.  

  • Ensure development of robust migration plans to move services from older platforms to replacement platforms with no service degradation.  

  • Contribute to the development of O&M processes for new services and platforms/systems.  Lead process improvement Initiatives within the team, driving efficiency and productivity. 

  • Identify the development and platforms/systems for new solution developments. 

  • Excellent knowledge of the Core Networks systems architecture, standards, and implementation 

  • Excellent knowledge of the mobile and voice networks architecture, standards and implementation 

  • Good knowledge of IP networks – design, implementation, and troubleshooting 

  • Substantial experience building carrier class applications. 

  • Knowledge and experience of Unix/Linux, Python, Perl scripting and other Telecoms tools and techniques. 

  • Design, build, test and support network / application components. 

  • Ensuring delivery targets are met on time, to budget, and meet applicable quality criteria. 

  • Proven ability to identify root causes to problems and find creative solutions. 

  • Relentless focus on consolidation and elimination of duplication 

  • Good knowledge of relevant network protocols / standards (ITU/ ETSI/ IETF etc) 


Requirements For A Successful Application:

Candidates will have:

  • Relevant Third level qualification or industry recognised certification with over five years proven track record in the development of systems and of systems architectures. 

  • Prior experience working with Core Networks systems, applications and services is a key differentiator.  

  • Additional experience in the following areas will be considered

    • System administration 

    • Application and software development 

    • Network and IP routing and switching 

  • Excellent analytical, documentation and presentation skills, along with a focus on results to ensure that objectives are met in line with project plans and milestones.  

  • Engineering experience including the following disciplines - solution definition (business analysis, platform/service design, development, data analysis / modelling), service delivery (capacity, availability, and service level management) and service support (problem, incident, change and release management) in a large production environment. 

  • A good understanding of all activities in the system and service life cycle with very wide communications technology knowledge and significant depth in several areas.
